Once again I’m going to take this space to plug an organization I like a lot. And if you have an interest in science and its applications within our world, you should check them out and subscribe to some of their free e-zines.
The organization is SPIE, and it continues to put together an
amazing array of information about technology that’s bubbling out of labs as
well as research that may change the way we live.
I attended their Photonics and Optics conference a few
months ago and talked to Amy Nelson, SPIE’s public relations manager. I
noted that I was enjoying the conference but it was definitely a scientific
conference for scientists. She told me that they held an Innovation
Summit that was focused more on the business community-leaders of some of
the top photonics companies (such as photovoltaic panel makers, etc.) as well
as leading scholars that discuss how to integrate innovation into companies.
Think you need to take
costly drugs to lower your blood pressure ?
Think again
! !
If you've got high
blood pressure, your doctor's probably told you to take drugs to control it for
the rest of your life. But not only are these medications often loaded with
dangerous side effects, your average out-of-pocket cost can run as high as
$1,116 a year!
Now there's a safer, less costly way to drop your blood
pressure to normal. Plus you're guaranteed to see results in as little as 4 to
7 weeks !
This new blood pressure breakthrough is 100% natural, yet it's
NOT a supplement. It's so effective, over 90% of people who use it are able to
drop their blood pressure to normal. What's more, at least 60% of those using
medication to control hypertension are able to cut back on or get off drugs for
good !
Find out why The Harvard Heart Letter in
their December 2006 issue reports this proven therapy "has been shown to lower
blood pressure as much as a first-line anti-hypertension drug" and "may be money
well-spent..." It works so well, a growing number of doctors and cardiologists
now recommend this therapy to patients and use it to lower their own blood
pressure !
Get the full scoop on this breakthrough solution right now.
It's just one click away...
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend. But SPIE has posted
the two-day event on its Web site so we can see what we missed. The above link
will take you a page where you can view the speakers’ presentations. Here’s
a broad overview of the Summit.
I’ve been a big fan of the advancements being made in
artificial intelligence (AI), especially in robotics. And few do robotics like
consumer and defense robot maker iRobot (NSDQ: IRBT). The company has sold many PackBot
units for use in Iraq and Afghanistan,
and the contracts continue to get bigger. There’s a big move underway in the US armed forces
to have a third of forward deployed forces automated by the middle of the next
decade.
It’s called net centric warfare.
And it looks kind of like this, courtesy of a JSTARS diagram embedded in an interesting blog post on the new
military.
Now, I’m not incredibly enthusiastic about the a
robot-filled battlespace as many defense contractors are, but that doesn’t
change the fact that Pentagon brass has been sold on the concept and is
investing into this concept in a big way. Unmanned aerial vehicles, robots--you
name it.
Anyway, my friends at SPIE had an interesting article
recently about the newest generation of ground vehicles being developed jointly
by iRobot and the US
military.
